Today is Memorial Day, and an unofficial start to summer. I think Memorial day is one of the holidays that we celebrate, but we forget the real meaning behind the holiday. This national holiday is meant for honoring ones that have sacrificed their lives for our country. Without any sacrifice, this country wouldn’t be what it is today.
The freedom and the opportunity to seize our dreams are more attainable in America than any other country. This theme was apparent starting from the Europeans who have traveled across the ocean to find better opportunity in new land. First generation immigrants always come to America to completely change the fate of their later generations for the better. This has been the infrastructure of United States, and veterans have fought for a better living condition for the later generations. Without their services, America wouldn’t be the beautiful country full of opportunities. So, do your part by by honoring the people that have served our country, and follow your aspiration as intended by your ancestors that immigrated to this beautiful country.
–In Flanders Fields by John McCrae–
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
